Royal Greenwich has secured £70,000 from the Mayor of London's Summer Streets programme to transform Woolwich town centre this summer with outdoor dining, evening entertainment and family-friendly activities.

Summer Streets is a Mayor of London initiative helping boroughs to create vibrant town centres during the summer months. The funding will be used to amplify our summer of culture, support Woolwich’s diverse foodie scene with pop-up al fresco dining zones and offer more chances to come together during the lighter evenings as part of a new Woolwich Summer Lates programme.

Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Council, said: “We are thrilled to have received Summer Streets funding for Woolwich. This is a chance for us to really demonstrate what Woolwich has to offer: a dynamic cultural destination full of energy and character, where everyone is welcome – and delicious food is always on the menu. Woolwich is the place to be this summer.”

Councillor Asli Mohammed, Cabinet Member for Economy, Town Centres and Co-operatives said: “Summer Streets will give a real boost to Woolwich’s economy, with increased footfall, extended opening hours and more outdoor seating. We will soon be decking out the town centre in Summer Streets style and it's great to see so many local businesses getting behind this campaign. From world cuisine to Woolwich Carnival, it's going to be a summer to remember.”

Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Equalities and Leisure, said: “Summer Streets is a fantastic addition to the exciting roster of free and inclusive cultural events and outdoor entertainment we have in store. Woolwich is great example of where heritage meets modern London life. From the iconic arsenal to the bustling market, from the pier to Woolwich Waves, there is so much to explore. Come for the day but stay for Woolwich Summer Lates.”

Celebrating Woolwich as a hidden culinary gem, Woolwich Summer Lates champions Woolwich’s wealth of diverse foodie destinations, independent eateries and historic pubs. Picnic benches and café style tables and chairs will appear across public spaces in General Gordon Square, Beresford Square and Royal Arsenal Riverside, as well as outside flagship venues such as Woolwich Works. A World Food Night Market will debut across the town centre with huts and trucks offering mouth-wateringly good food from around the globe.

The Summer Streets party will be ready to serve on 10 July with the Wimbledon final and finishes on a high after the Woolwich Carnival on 12 September. Expect busking and street performances, Wimbledon being shown on the Big Screen plus live coverage of the FIFA World Cup and other events happening at partner venues.

Summer Streets also enhances the exhilarating summer events programme, which includes Greenwich+Dockland International Festival of outdoor theatre bookended by events in General Gordon Square: festival opener 360 takes place on Friday 21 August and closes with (In)visible Dancing on Sunday 6 September.
