Statement on Eglinton Hill and future Thames Water improvement works

After months of disruption and delays caused by Thames Water’s ongoing emergency works addressing a mains leak, the final issues have now been resolved thanks to a successful no-dig repair.

While it’s good news for local people, it comes after a prolonged period of frustration due to Thames Water’s lack of communication and coordination. We’d like to apologise to residents and the wider public once more for the disruption and inconvenience that Thames Water’s works have caused.

After discussions with the council, Thames Water have now confirmed that Eglinton Hill and the wider Shooters Hill area have been prioritised for a water mains upgrade which will future-proof the area against similar issues. The exact schedule is still being developed, but Thames Water have said that these works will commence later in 2026.

Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport, said: “I’m glad that these repairs are finally complete and that disruption to residents and the wider public has come to an end. We've written to Thames Water to make clear our anger at their management of the works, and outlining our frustration at their lack of engagement and communication with both us and TfL Buses.

"This whole situation demonstrates the critical importance of Thames Water upgrading their mains network across the area, and I'm glad that Thames have agreed to our request that wider upgrades around the area are prioritised for later this year. Modern water mains negate the potential for repeated leaks and bursts, which will ultimately reduce further inconvenience for our residents going forward.”

"We'll continue to push Thames Water to ensure they deliver these upgrades in a timely, well-coordinated manner which minimises disruption for local people and the wider public.
