£100 reward for residents who tip-off us about fly-tippers

Residents who help the Royal Borough of Greenwich crack down on fly-tippers will get a £100 reward if the council successfully prosecutes or fines a perpetrator thanks to their tip-off. This is in addition to the council increasing on the spot fines to the maximum amount of £1,000 earlier this month.

Residents are encouraged to submit information that helps identify ‘People of Binterest’, those responsible for fly-tipping in Greenwich. Submissions can include photos or video footage, including doorbell or CCTV footage, unedited and includes the date and time of the incident. Our dedicated team will review evidence submitted and contact suppliers if it leads to a successful prosecution.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Business, Greenwich Supports and Environmental Servies, said: “Fly-tipping is a crime and those caught dumping on our borough could be fined up to £50,000 if prosecuted. It also costs taxpayers hundreds of thousands of pounds a year for the council to clear up – and it’s a horrible thing to see on your road, in the park or on the high street. Help us catch these criminals. If you have any evidence of someone fly-tipping, you can let us know via report-reward@royalgreenwich.gov.uk and if your tip-off helps us tick-off a fly-tipper, you’ll get a £100 reward.”

Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, added: “We’ve all had enough of this s***. We’ve already upped the fine for people we catch fly-tipping from £400 to £1,000 – and now on top of that, we’re giving residents £100 if they help us with a useful tip. Between this, installing extra cameras and bringing in extra officers, we’re getting things done to stamp this lazy habit out.”

This is part of the council’s £5million Getting Things Done drive to make its streets cleaner by punishing people who fly-tip, as well as improving how it clears up mess and makes it easier for people to get rid of rubbish the right way.

To dispose of waste legally and easily please book a bulky waste collection on the council's website or take it to the Reuse and Recycling Centre.

How will it work?

We’ll need the original recording or imagery of someone suspected to be in the act of fly-tipping. It needs to be, where possible, timestamped with the location.

Images or footage of the dumped waste without evidence of who did it won’t help, but can still be reported for our teams to clear via fixmystreet.

Information, tips and evidence can be reported to report-reward@royalgreenwich.gov.uk

If a tip-off successfully leads to a prosecution residents will get £100 on a prepaid card.
