Proposed motorcycle parking bays in the borough

Residents, businesses and visitors are being invited to view the proposals to introduce new motorcycle parking bays at locations in the north of the borough, with more locations to be considered in the future. These dedicated bays in town centres would aim to manage kerbside space while supporting local businesses, residents and people travelling by motorcycle.

The motorcycle parking bays are being proposed in Woolwich, Plumstead and Charlton, with locations also being considered to support the growing use of motorcycle journeys in the borough, particularly those used for motorcycle-based deliveries.

The proposed changes aim to:

  • Provide clearly designated parking for motorcycles in busy town centres
  • Improve the management of kerbside space
  • Reduce inappropriate parking on pavements and other unsuitable locations, including those where they might obstruct cars and vans from parking
  • Support businesses and delivery services while maintaining safe and accessible streets for everyone

As part of the statutory consultation, the council is inviting responses on the proposed locations before any final decisions are made. The consultation will run from: 28 October until 17 November 2026.

Full details of the proposals, including plans for each location and information on how to respond, are available at: Royalgreenwich.gov.uk/motorcycle-bays

Notices will also be displayed at the affected locations, with statutory notices published in accordance with the legal process. All comments received during the statutory consultation period will be carefully considered before any final decisions are made.

Calum O'Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Climate Change, Streets and Waste, said:

"As our town centres continue to grow and change, it's important that we make the best use of our streets.

“While delivery apps may be convenient if you are sat at home, they can create real inconveniences in our Town Centres and shopping parades. We’re therefore consulting on proposals to provided dedicated spaces for motorcycles, and, where appropriate, delivery cycles, to improve safety, reduce unnecessary pavement parking and support local businesses who are serving residents across Greenwich.

"We encourage residents, businesses and road users to review the proposals and share their views during the consultation."
