We are making it easier for people to get around by bike by proposing more on-street cycle hangars across the borough. Not everyone has access to a safe place to store a bike which we know puts people off, so we are launching this statutory consultation to invest in installing more safe on-street cycle hangars.
The council is proposing to introduce Traffic Management Orders (TMOs) to formalise the placement of 50 new on-street cycle hangars across the borough. The proposals include new cycle hangar locations identified through resident demand and engagement with ward councillors, as well as one amended location where, following feedback from a previous consultation, a proposed site has been relocated to a nearby street.
At this stage, the statutory consultation seeks views on whether the council should proceed with making the TMOs. It does not approve installation or confirm final delivery timescales.
Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport, said:
“One of the major barriers to getting around by bike is knowing you have somewhere safe to store your bike, particularly as many of us don’t have space to safely store our bike at home. That’s why we’re proposing 50 new cycle hangars across the borough, at locations residents have asked for them.”
The statutory consultation will run from 18 February to 11 March 2026. During this period, residents and stakeholders will be able to view plans and submit comments or objections, which must be made in writing and clearly set out the grounds for objection.
The relevant plans and notice of proposals can be viewed online here
Paper copies of the plans will also be available for public viewing at Woolwich Centre Library during normal opening hours.
Notices will be displayed on affected streets, with advertisements appearing in the London Gazette, and the Greenwich Weekender.
All comments and objections received during the statutory consultation period will be carefully considered before the council decides whether to proceed with making the TMOs.
