Residents are being invited to view proposals that aim to improve cycling and pedestrian safety as well as traffic flow near Plumstead station. The proposals form part of wider improvements to Cycleway 4, enhancing the route between Woolwich and Plumstead.
The scheme would introduce a safer, more efficient environment for both cyclists and bus passengers.
The proposed changes include:
- Introduction of a segregated cycle lane, a bus stop bypass for cyclists
- Introduction of a short section of a bus lane between the junction with Pettman Crescent and the bus stop
- Changes to waiting and loading restrictions
- Introduction and removal of relevant signage within the area.
These measures aim to reduce conflict between cyclists, pedestrians, public transport users and vehicles, improving overall safety and traffic flow.
These improvements build on feedback received during the consultation for the Plumstead Public Realm Improvement Project (PRIP) and reflect the council’s commitment to creating a cleaner, greener borough that is easier to navigate.
Royal Borough of Greenwich spokesperson said:
"These proposals will help improve the quality and safety of Cycleway 4 while ensuring bus services continue to operate efficiently. Bus stop bypasses are designed to remove one of the most common conflict points on cycle routes, where cyclists would otherwise need to merge with stationary or pulling-out buses. By providing a segregated route behind the bus stop, the scheme improves safety and reduces journey disruption"
The statutory consultation will run from 27 May to 17 June 2026, during which time residents and stakeholders can review the proposals and submit objections or representations. Notices will be displayed on street, with further details published in the London Gazette and Greenwich Weekender.

What are bus stop bypasses?
Bus stop bypasses are designs in which the bus shelter/flag is located on an island separate from the cycle track with the track routed behind that island. Bus passengers board and alight from and to the footway island.
