Plans to improve cycling, walking and wheeling connections through Greenwich town centre continue to move forward. Further design and traffic modelling work is underway as the Royal Borough of Greenwich and Transport for London (TfL) develop proposals for the future of the town centre.

The scheme forms part of the council’s longer-term ambition to create a safer, greener and more accessible town centre by reducing the dominance of through traffic and improving conditions for locals and visitors to Greenwich. Work has continued to develop the project further with TfL and a range of local stakeholders and partners including Greenwich Market, University of Greenwich and London Marathon Events, and we aim to consult the public later this year.

Helen Cansick, Head of Healthy Streets Investment Planning at TfL, said: “It's encouraging to see the emerging proposals for Greenwich Town Centre Liveable Neighbourhood, which will reduce the dominance of traffic through this World Heritage Site to make it easier, safer and more enjoyable for people to walk, wheel and cycle in the area. These plans will improve air quality and create more vibrant, welcoming streets for residents, businesses and visitors. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the Royal Borough of Greenwich to support the delivery of the lasting benefits this scheme will bring to the community.”

The Mayor of London’s Walking and Cycling Commissioner, Will Norman, has also expressed support for the proposals: “I’m delighted to see progress on these plans to make it safer and easier to walk and cycle, which will help tackle congestion and improve air quality in Greenwich town centre and beyond. The Mayor and I are committed to supporting boroughs across the capital to boost active and sustainable travel as we continue building a greener, fairer, better London for everyone.”

Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Transport, Climate Change, Waste and Streets said: “Greenwich Town Centre is one of London's most historic and internationally recognised destinations, but the current layout can feel hostile to anyone on foot thanks to the heavy traffic and narrow pavements. We need a Town Centre that people want to spent time in, not one they feel rushed through. The aim to pedestrianise much of the Town Centre around the iconic market will do just that, not only making it safer to walk, wheel or cycle in, but unlocking opportunities for local businesses, and making it a nicer place for visitors and residents alike."

As part of the next phase of work, detailed traffic modelling is currently being undertaken and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. This modelling will help assess how changes to the road network could operate and inform the ongoing development of the scheme.

Subject to further design and modelling work, public consultation is currently anticipated to take place in November this year.

The proposals align with the council’s commitment to tackle the climate crisis and support more sustainable travel choices across the borough.

Further updates on the project and future consultation opportunities will be shared as the scheme progresses.

Greenwich Town Centre Liveable Neighbourhood is a separate scheme from the Greenwich Interim Connection scheme. A statutory consultation on Greenwich Interim Connection scheme will be undertaken in due course
