Over the next six weeks, our transformation of Plumstead High Street will enter its second phase to make the road safer, greener and more accessible for everyone.

Starting on Tuesday 17 February, as part of our road safety scheme in Plumstead, work is starting on a new zebra crossing outside Bannockburn Primary School and the relocation of an existing bus stop adjacent to the school. When combined with the 20mph speed limit already in place, it’ll be safer and easier than ever for children and families to get around.

We’ll also be planting new trees, resurfacing the road, and widening and renewing the footway near the crossing with tactile paving. As well as improving the look and feel of the area, these improvements make it smoother, safer and better for drivers, pedestrians and public transport users.

To facilitate these improvements, temporary two-way lights will be in place for the duration of the works period.

Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport, said: “We're making Plumstead a safer and more pleasant place to be, that is also easier to get around, with crossing, pavement, road and public space improvements.

“This scheme has something for everyone, from the more convenient bus stop location and new zebra crossing for children, families and staff at Bannockburn Primary School to the newly-resurfaced carriageway and renewed footway for pedestrians and road users.

“We're sorry for the inconvenience while works are underway, and I’m really grateful to everyone in the area for their patience as we work towards a new and improved Plumstead High Street.”

Residents wishing to travel via Plumstead High Street for the next six weeks are advised to check their journey before they travel, allowing additional time if necessary.

These works will be followed by the third phase of improvements on Plumstead High Street. We’ll keep you updated on these works once the details have been finalised.
