Have Your Say on the Woolwich to Thamesmead Cycleway

Residents and local businesses are being invited to share their views on proposals for a new Woolwich to Thamesmead Cycleway, designed to create safer, greener and more accessible travel routes across the borough.

The proposed cycleway would link new residential developments at Woolwich Riverside with growing residential communities in Thamesmead, using quieter roads to provide a safer and more attractive option for walking and cycling. The project is funded by Transport for London (TfL) and developer contributions.

Improving conditions for walking and cycling supports public health, reduces congestion, improves air quality and helps the borough move towards its goal of becoming carbon neutral.

In addition to a new cycle route, the proposals include a range of public realm improvements, such as better pedestrian crossings, upgraded paving, improved lighting, refreshed road markings and the removal of damaged or redundant street furniture. Importantly, the proposals do not involve removing parking or introducing additional traffic restrictions.

Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport said:

"Improving cycle routes and pedestrian accessibility across the borough is vital, especially in areas such Woolwich and Thamesmead, where communities are growing rapidly."

"Wider pavements and improved crossings make it safer and easier for pedestrians, and safe, accessible cycling infrastructure encourages healthier, more sustainable travel, connecting residents to local amenities, schools, and workplaces, improving our streets and public spaces for all.”

Residents are encouraged to take part in the consultation and provide feedback on the proposals before 19 March 2026
