Have your say on School Uniform Grants for our schools

We are inviting you to have your say on our School Uniform Grant scheme.

Like councils across the country, we are facing rising costs and increased demand for services. This means it is important to regularly review support to ensure they remain affordable, effective and support those who need it most.

We currently provides more than 1,300 uniform grants to help families with the cost of clothing. They are available for children in Reception, Year 3, Year 7 and Year 9 who are eligible for benefits related free school meals.

Councillor Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Inclusive Economy, Business, Skills and Greenwich Supports said: “We see every day how rising costs are affecting families, especially when it comes to essentials like school uniform. These grants ease some of that pressure, and we are determined to continue providing this support, while reducing the overall strain on our budgets.

"This consultation is about understanding real experiences, being honest about the challenges councils face and working together to shape and support families so they feel secure.”

Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “Every child deserves to feel prepared for school, and no parent or guardian should feel stretched by the cost of school clothing.

"Taking the time to review this scheme helps us protect support while continuing to spend public money wisely. We know many families are struggling, our ambition is to make sure they feel supported and not left to face these pressures alone.”

Experiences and feedback will help inform decisions and ensure support is able to make the biggest difference to families.

The council encourages parents, carers and schools to take part and share their views by Monday 23 March.

You can find printed copies at local libraries in Royal Greenwich, you can also email feedback directly to us.
