Council shortlisted for two national awards

A rising star and Greenwich’s trailblazing work to improve the lives of vulnerable adults have been shortlisted for prestigious national awards.

Greenwich has had two successful nominations at the Local Government Chronicle Awards – sought after accolades for public service.

The Council’s transformative Digital Health and Care Technology Service is up for the Health and Social Care award, and Rob Allen has been nominated for ‘Rising Star’ for his work to reduce homeless families living in hotels and B&Bs.

The Digital Health and Care Technology service supports residents to transform lives by providing technology to support people to live fulfilling and independent lives. Greenwich has developed a unique partnership with local NHS partners to invest in this work and to benefit adults of all ages to live the lives that they choose with support that is dignified.

Meanwhile, Rob Allen has been put forward for his lifechanging work to reduce the number of families living in hotels, working across the organisation to tackle the complex problem of temporary accommodation. Thanks to his innovation and determination, the Council was able to provide housing to every family living in a hotel, reducing the number down to 0 from an unprecedented high of 260.

Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “Both these nominations have something in common: they’re centred around changing the lives of residents in Greenwich. Whether it’s helping people live freely and independently or putting safe and secure homes over families’ heads, both Rob and the entire Health and Care Technology team should be extremely proud of the difference that they are making to the lives of our residents.

“Being nominated is an achievement in its own right, but I’ll be keeping everything crossed for Rob and the Health and Care team. They’re great examples of the impact councils can have, and how we can get things done for the better.”

The Council had an unprecedented number of families living in Hotels and Temporary Accommodation. In April 2025 we had reduced use of hotel and Bed & by a staggering 84% in only 18 months and reduced the pressure on the council’s finances by around £5.88m.

The Digital Health and Care Technology Service helps adults live more safely, independently and confidently in their own homes. It offers simple, personalised technology to support daily routines, manage health needs and provide reassurance for both residents and their families.

The service is especially helpful for people who may forget appointments or medication, have recently been in hospital, live alone, are at risk of falls, or feel anxious about managing at home.
