Council Leader Anthony Okereke welcomed Local London members to Plumstead on Thursday to mark the opening of the new Future Greenwich Campus of London South East Colleges (LSEC).
Cllr Okereke was joined by fellow council leaders of the other eight London boroughs in the north east and south east of the capital which form Local London for a joint committee meeting.
Cllr Okereke, who is also Chair of Local London, said: “As council leader, and a lifelong borough resident, it is always an honour to show off the best of our borough, particularly to people who don’t live, work, study or regularly visit here.
“Similar to my role as council leader, my role as Chair of Local London has not only been a chance to push Greenwich to the top of the agenda, but also to build relationships that help to unlock growth, jobs and opportunities right here and across our diverse and dynamic eastern strip of the capital.
"Royal Greenwich is one of London’s fastest growing boroughs, with a population approaching 300,000 and projected to rise significantly over the coming decades. While our economy has grown strongly, we know we must go further to ensure residents can access good work closer to home.
"This new £47 million campus, delivered alongside nearly 300 new homes, more than half of them affordable, is a powerful example of what long term collaboration between local government, education partners and the private sector can achieve.
“And visiting the new Future Greenwich Campus of London South East Colleges couldn’t have been more fitting given it only opened on Monday and that I studied at the Bromley campus. Investing in education is key to unlocking the potential of our young people and adult learners."
London South East Colleges, the first BREEAM Outstanding college in the country, has been on a remarkable journey over the past decade, transforming from a struggling further education provider into one of the country’s leading colleges, with improved outcomes for learners and a strong financial footing.
The visit concluded with a tour of the new campus and a networking lunch prepared by LSEC catering students, showcasing the skills and talent emerging from the borough’s education system.
