Council ‘Highly Commended' for use of AI innovation to better target housing investment

The MJ Achievement Awards 2026

The council’s innovative approach to using AI to improve council homes for residents by identifying issues early and sorting them out quicker than before has been highly commended at the MJ Achievement Awards 2026.

Developed by DG Cities, the council’s innovation company, the council received the recognition for its Home-by-Home Plan in the ‘AI Innovation in Local Government’ category.

Cllr Jackie Smith, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing, Greenwich Build and Estate Regeneration, said: “We are proud to be recognised for using AI in a way that allows us to quickly find out about any underlying issues across our housing stock before they become larger problems, in a way that simply wasn’t possible before.

“It has helped us cut down the time this normally takes from around 30 days to just a single afternoon, meaning we can make quicker, better decisions for tenants in the long-term.

“Being highly commended for this award is a great endorsement of our approach and reflects the hard work and commitment of everyone involved in making the project a success.”

The Home-by-Home Plan uses a Large Language Model (LLM) to analyse hundreds of thousands of housing records, data and feedback from multiple different sources, which is then used to create a ranked view of each of the council’s 21,000 council homes at a property, block or estate level.

By using AI to analyse different sets of information together, the council has access to data in real-time that allow council officers to strategically plan our £50million of investment to reach the homes that need it the most. The plan also provides a strong evidence base that gives officers far greater insights that is better focused on vulnerability and risk.

The MJ Achievement Awards recognise excellence, innovation and outstanding achievement across councils and public services. They celebrate the teams, projects and leaders making a positive difference to communities and improving outcomes for residents.
