June is LGBTQIA+ Pride Month and the Royal Borough of Greenwich is set to celebrate with a range of inclusive activities for residents to get involved with.
Events will take place across the borough, from family arts and crafts and story-time at our libraries to cabaret and stand-up comedy at Woolwich Works and costume and puppet-making workshops at National Maritime Museum.
The Pride progress flag will also fly above Woolwich Town Hall, and the council is encouraging local organisations to sign our Equality and Equity Charter.
The council will also run a programme of internal activities and workshops for staff.
Councillor Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Equalities and Leisure, said: “Pride Month is a time for celebration, reflection and solidarity. It’s vital this continues all year round. Here in Greenwich, we are proud of our diverse and inclusive community, and we want to make sure that everyone feels, valued and able to be themselves.
“We stand alongside our LGBTQ+ residents, honouring the progress that has been made while recognising there is still more to do to achieve true equality. We are committed to building a borough where love is respected, diversity is celebrated, and no one is left behind.
“Make the most of June’s packed programme of activities in Greenwich to celebrate and learn about Pride and, if you're a local organisation, sign our Equality and Equity Charter now to join us in our pledge for equality across our borough.”
LGBTQIA+ Pride Month is celebrated annually across the world in June, to mark the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots that took place in New York City on 28 June 1969. Celebrations will continue into July, with Pride in London taking place on Saturday 4 July.
