February is LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or questioning) History Month, and we’re joining our partners to share a fantastic range of inclusive events to get involved in. From family-friendly activities to reading groups and craft socials, organisations across the borough will be showing support for the LGBTQ+ community and hosting events celebrating local LGBTQ+ culture, heritage and history.
Councillor Sandra Bauer, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said: “This year’s LGBTQ+ History Month theme, ‘science and innovation’, is something that impacts us all daily, from healthcare to the technology in our homes. Diversity in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) industry is hugely important to make sure progress in this field benefits us all.
“This month is an opportunity to highlight the contributions of LGBTQ+ people to science and technology – from Barbara Burford, a medical researcher who established NHS equality and diversity guidelines to polar explorer and botanist, Elke Mackenzie, and their impact on understanding the world around us.
“It’s also a chance for people of all ages to learn more about the rich history of our own LGBTQ+ communities. By listening about each other’s stories and experiences, we can continue to ensure that Royal Greenwich is a welcoming and inclusive place.”
