Councillor Averil Lekau, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport, said:

We’re committed to putting residents at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we launched the next round of informal consultation on Sustainable Streets last Monday (14 July). We wanted to hear directly from residents in the areas of Charlton, Kidbrooke and Blackheath, Plumstead, Shooters Hill, Thamesmead West and Woolwich about how we can improve local streets and make our neighbourhoods safer, healthier, and more liveable for everyone.

However, we know there have been strong feelings about the detailed design proposals, particularly controlled parking measures and the consultation process running over the school holidays. Many residents also told us that they have found some of the materials difficult to navigate.

So, we’re making improvements – simplifying the content where possible, making sure information is clearer by improving the map legends and making it easier for residents to find their street, and making sure people know how to take part. We will create a ‘how-to’ video to help residents navigate the maps and other material. And, to make sure everyone has a chance to engage and have their say, we are also extending the consultation period by more than a month to Tuesday 30 September 2025

I want to reassure residents that this consultation is not a ‘done deal’. This is a genuine opportunity to have your say on what Sustainable Streets in your area could look like, and your feedback will help us refine the final designs – which will be subject to a further round of statutory consultation later down the line too.

Due to the number of responses we have received so far, it’s clear to us that we need to move our community drop-in sessions to the Town Hall in Woolwich where we can adequately present plans and provide more clarity. There will be one event tailored to each area. We will need to ask residents to register in advance to ensure we have capacity to accommodate everyone who wishes to share their views in person. We will write to residents with information on how to register and then update the online portal.

Then later in September we will hold a further round of events in each area where we can have more detailed conversations with each community. More information will be coming soon.

If you haven’t had your say yet, please do. Whether you support the ideas, have concerns, or want to suggest something different – we want to hear from you.
