Status update: Eglinton Hill and Herbert Road water leak

Transport and travel, road closure update

We’re sorry for the disruption these emergency works have caused for residents around Eglinton Hill and Herbert Road. Thames Water has confirmed that the road closure will likely need to stay in place until mid‑January 2026.

When the emergency closure was first put in place on Eglinton Hill, Thames Water did not yet know the full impact on the wider water network, which has since affected Herbert Road as well.

There were further issues over the weekend, but Thames Water has now repaired the leak on Eglinton Hill. Their next step is to fix other damaged parts of the network, including three additional leaks on Herbert Road.

The council has raised concerns with Thames Water about how often emergency works are happening in this area. Thames Water has said they will review the site to see whether longer‑term improvements are needed as part of a wider investment programme.

Thames Water will be sending their own updates to residents, and will be working seven days a week to resolve the issues. However, they have confirmed that no excavation or ground‑breaking will take place on Sundays to reduce noise and disruption to residents.

We will continue to work closely with Thames Water to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.

Council officers are also in contact with Transport for London to ensure they are updated when roads reopen, so bus services can return to normal.

In the meantime, we advise you to check your journey before you travel and allow additional time if your route is impacted.
