Approval has been granted on three new social housing schemes, helping the council move towards achieving its target of creating 1,750 council homes across the borough.

The schemes, located in Abbey Wood and Kidbrooke Park, will provide 24 carbon neutral one and two-bedroom homes, eight of which are wheelchair accessible. The high proportion of accessible homes will help the council achieve its 10% target for wheelchair adapted housing on its new developments.

While these developments are focused on smaller homes, a third of the 1,750 homes the council are creating are three-bedroom and larger.

Cllr Majid Rahman, Cabinet Member for Planning, Estate Renewal and Development, said:

“Social housing is the surest way to overcome London’s housing crisis. It enables everyone in our community to thrive by providing secure homes that are truly affordable, with social rents linked to local incomes.

These latest planning approvals show that, despite the challenges facing homebuilders across the country, we are continuing to make headway towards our goal of creating 1,750 new council homes as part of Housing Our Greenwich.

We look forward to seeing construction begin on these homes, which will join over 780 other council homes now completed across our borough.”

When finished the approved homes will be among hundreds completed for local people on the housing register.

Royal Borough of Greenwich has been named the top affordable home builder in London for the past three years, with the highest number of new affordable homes started of any London borough.
