This past weekend, the Royal Borough of Greenwich in partnership with Mencap hosted an inclusive Winter Sports Day, bringing residents with disabilities together to take part in accessible activities.

The event marked International Day of Persons with Disabilities, which champions inclusion, confidence building, and community connection through sport and movement.

Councillor Sandra Bauer, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said: “This event is an important reminder of why inclusion matters. International Day of Persons with Disabilities is not just a date, it's a commitment to ensuring every resident is seen, supported and able to live a full and active life. I'm proud of how our community continues to work together to celebrate and build a more accessible Greenwich for all.”

Councillor Mariam Lolavar, Cabinet Member for Health, Adult Social Care and Borough of Sanctuary, said: “We’re committed to creating a borough where residents with disabilities feel supported, confident and empowered all year around. Access to inclusive sport and activity plays a vital role in improving wellbeing, reducing isolation and building a healthier and more connected community.”

In England, 43% of adults over the age of 16 live with at least one long term health condition. As part of Greenwich Get Active, we are working to deliver activities to support residents to get active in a way that works for them, such as through our Fun and Fitness programme. These weekly sessions deliver a wide range of activities including studio-based movement classes, accessible swimming, football, Zumba and specialised sessions for participants with complex needs.

Participants have reported increased confidence, improved physical engagement, and broader participation in other community sport opportunities including basketball, cycling and tennis. Many participants have also developed new life skills, including independent travel, money management.

Residents can also access the We Are Undefeatable app, which offers tailored exercise programmes that factor in any long-term health conditions.
