We have launched a consultation asking residents to share their views on the our Budget for 2026 to 2027.
Like many councils across London, we are still feeling the long-term impact of government funding cuts that began back in 2010. At the same time, the cost of running essential services like care for older residents, children, and families who rely on the council’s support has continued to drastically rise.
We have always managed its finances carefully and responsibly, but it is now facing a combination of pressures that make this increasingly difficult.
The survey invites communities to share what their priorities are, and comment on five budget principles that will lead the council’s direction when setting a balanced budget.
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “As a council, our mission is to make sure every pound works harder for our residents. When people are struggling the most, we want to be a safe and secure place they can turn to, so they can access the support and resources they need to improve their situation.
“We know our communities care deeply about seeing us get things done. That is why we are investing over £60 million over the next five years to improve safety, tackle fly tipping, fix our streets, and deliver the improvements residents want to see. But the bigger picture is that people are living longer, the borough is growing, and more adults and children need support that is more expensive than ever to provide. We want residents to understand these pressures and help us set the priorities for the year ahead.”
Councillor Denise Hyland, Cabinet Member for Finance, Resources and Social Value: “We are asking residents to take part in this consultation because their voices will help shape the choices we make together. For many years we have planned carefully and used our resources responsibly, but the challenges we face now mean we need to be even more open about how decisions are made.
“Our five proposed budget principles set out how we will approach those decisions fairly and consistently, making sure we protect vital services while using our money in the smartest way possible. This consultation is your chance to influence that approach and tell us what matters most to you, so we can make every penny count.”
We welcome the Government’s plans to introduce three-year funding settlements, as long term funding is something councils have been calling for to allow us to plan ahead. However, the latest proposals suggest some funding may be shifted away from inner London, which could have a serious impact on budgets, including Greenwich.
We expect to receive its final funding settlement from the Government in February. Until then there is still uncertainty, and we may need to make some tough decisions to ensure it remains financially stable and able to protect the services residents depend on.
Residents can take part in the consultation online from Monday 24 November to Monday 22 December.
Paper surveys will be available in libraries and leisure centres from Monday 1 December and can be returned to staff until Monday 22 December.
