Foxfield Primary School gives birds and bats a helping hand for National Tree Week

Pupils from Foxfield Primary School are helping wildlife stay warm this winter by putting up bird and bat boxes to celebrate National Tree Week. The students decorated the cosy homes, before putting them up in trees around the school grounds.

The boxes will give them somewhere snug to nest in the cold weather and provide a safe place for birds to raise their chicks next spring. By observing the boxes, students will also gain a fascinating insight into the animals’ lives.

Councillor Sandra Bauer, Cabinet Member for Equality, Culture and Communities, said: “This National Tree Week, Foxfield Primary School have done a brilliant job decorating putting up bird and bat boxes. Their hard work and passion will inspire students and staff alike to spend time outdoors in nature and learn about local wildlife – keep up the great work!

“We know how important our outdoor spaces are for the health and wellbeing of our residents. That’s why we’ve planted 5000 new trees across the borough since 2002, to boost biodiversity, protect local wildlife and make our award-winning parks and green spaces even better for our communities.”

Pupil Pearl, said: “We’re putting up bird and bat boxes in the trees so they can have a home to live in. And in spring, the birds will have babies and create a family.”

The Royal Borough of Greenwich is home to over 100 parks and open spaces, 16 of which have been recognised with prestigious Green Flag Awards. The council have planted 5000 new trees across the borough since 2022, with the help of local parks Friends Groups.

National Tree Week 2025 runs from 22 November to 30 November and is the UK’s largest annual tree celebration. The nationwide event encourages people across the country to plant thousands of new trees to mark the start of tree planting season.
