Twice as many potholes and worn out pavements are going to be fixed under new plans to Get Things Done in Greenwich.
Maintaining our roads and pavements makes it easier, safer and greener to move around the borough however you travel. That’s why we are more than doubling our budget to repair potholes, resurface roads and get things done.
We’re investing £8million over the next five years to fill more potholes and fix uneven surfaces which we know are two issues that frustrate residents.
Councillor Anthony Okereke, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: "Road maintenance is a constant bugbear and understandably so. Potholes and dodgy pavements can be costly and dangerous. That's why using money we’ve secured ,we’re getting things done to fix double the amount of potholes and tired pavements. Whether you walk, cycle, drive, ride – this will make a real difference to getting around the borough. ”
Councillor Calum O’Byrne Mulligan, Interim Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability and Transport said: “We’re making roads safer and improving journey times, which will save everyone money from avoidable repairs - as well as reducing the risks for cyclists and pedestrians. Everyone in our borough should be able to travel safely and this investment demonstrates our commitment to getting things done and keeping the borough moving."
The additional £1.6million a year will more than double our existing budget for pothole repairs and road surfacing, from just over £1m to £2.6million.
The increased budget means hundreds more potholes will be filled, and double the number of roads resurfaced annually.
Residents in Plumstead have already benefited from the works this summer and that impact will be felt in other areas of the borough over the coming months and years.
This investment comes from ringfenced grants and the Council's negotiations with developers to secure £60million that it can use to focus on the things that it knows really matter to residents – because they matter to the Council too. The money is part of the Council's Getting Things Done drive which can’t be used to offset any future deficits.
