Residents are being asked to help shape the future of the Royal Borough of Greenwich’s initiative which is designed to create safer and healthier environments around schools.

The council is launching a comprehensive engagement process to gather feedback on existing and proposed School Street schemes, aiming to improve air quality and promote active travel for children and families.

School Streets work by restricting motor traffic during school drop-off and pick-up times, which is aimed at reducing harmful pollutants and improving the quality of air.

Councillor Averil Lekau, Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Sustainability, and Transport, said: “We are committed to creating safer, healthier streets for our children. Restricting motor traffic during school drop-off and pickups helps reduce harmful pollutants, leading to cleaner air and better respiratory health for our young people. But to achieve these aims, we need your help. Your experiences and opinions on travel, particularly concerning journeys to and from schools, are vital in shaping the future of our School Streets programme. The programme aligns with the council’s commitment to making travel around the borough easier and greener, prioritising the safety and well-being of children and parents walking, cycling, and scooting to school.”

The engagement process will address four existing permanent and 11 temporary School Streets, as well as 21 new proposed locations.

The engagement process involves three stages:

  • pre-engagement to understand community perspectives
  • formal engagement to gather views on the scheme
  • statutory consultation where anyone may object to a scheme by making a formal representation, which the council would consider before a final decision is made
