Attack at Manchester synagogue – Leader’s statement

Thursday 2 October 2025

The Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, Cllr Anthony Okereke has denounced today’s (Thursday 2 October) attack outside the Heaton Park Synagogue in Manchester.

Cllr Anthony Okereke, said: “We condemn the appalling attack outside the Heaton Park Synagogue. Our thoughts are with all those affected, particularly the victims and their families.

“This heinous act took place on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, and outside a place worship when it should have been a day of peace, prayer and reflection.

“We recognise that some residents in our borough will understandably be feeling shaken and distressed. I want to reassure those residents that there is no place for hate in the Royal Borough of Greenwich – there never has and there never will be. We are working with partners to reach out to our Jewish communities to see how we can best support them at this time.

“The Royal Borough of Greenwich is a proud Borough of Sanctuary where all residents should feel safe, respected and welcome.”
