Educate Against Racism is a partnership of school leaders from across Royal Greenwich. It aims to make a difference in our schools by addressing racial biases and imbalances.

Mission and principles

Our mission is to put equality, diversity and inclusion at the forefront of everything we do in our schools.

It is a safe space to grow, challenge, support each other and look at ourselves and our organisations. This work benefits pupils, staff and our communities.

The group’s underlying principles are:

  • Language matters. We need to develop consistent and reflective language.
  • Supporting global majority staff and communities will have benefits across the workforce and community.
  • Other inequality and discrimination are important and we should not overlook them. But focusing on equality as a whole will not help us tackle discrimination.
  • The challenges affecting people from global majority backgrounds will vary. Issues will often overlap but will also be different.
  • There is a lot of work already taking place across Royal Greenwich. Future work can support and build on this. This work is complex and will take time, consistency and focus.
  • Work needs to be inclusive and include staff throughout the organisation. Structural racism is not only an issue for global majority staff, it is important for all staff. We may not always get it right, but we will learn together.
  • Tackling structural racism will need many interventions. Our activity will recognise the overlap between issues and solutions.

Membership

The partnership includes senior leaders from schools at every level. It includes nursery to post 16, special schools and pupil referral units.

A school leader chairs the group and Royal Greenwich staff support it.
