How we decide what housing band to put you in

We put everyone who is accepted onto the register into Band C first. We then put people into priority bands on a case-by-case basis if they have certain needs, such as disabilities.

Housing bands

There are 4 housing bands:

  • Band A
  • Band B1
  • Band B2
  • Band C

Band A

This is for people who:

  • must move because the property they’re living in is due to be demolished or refurbished
  • are tenants who are under-occupying family homes
  • are tenants who are living in properties with adaptations they do not need
  • are tenants who cannot return to their property after leaving hospital because it is no longer suitable for their needs

We consider people in this band first, before other bands. We’ll allocate properties in date order from when a person was given Band A priority.

Bands B1 and B2

These are for people who:

  • have serious medical needs affected by their housing
  • are homeless and in ‘priority need’
  • are living in a severely overcrowded home
  • are living in housing that is confirmed to be unsanitary by Environmental Health and it cannot be fixed within a reasonable amount of time
  • are at risk of domestic violence, hate crime or other types of abuse
  • need to move out of our care, supported housing or other specific types of accommodation
  • need to move out of accommodation that we put them in to prevent them being homeless but are then faced with homelessness through no fault of their own
  • are key workers or others with a specific need to live in the borough
  • work for Royal Greenwich who must move to do their job, or because they’re leaving their job. Staff who have been dismissed are not eligible
  • are tenants under-occupying their property by one bedroom, or they’ve been left in a council property after the tenancy ends, subject to an assessment of their needs and circumstances
  • have left the armed forces and have a connection with the borough (Band B1)
  • have left the armed forces and do not have a connection with the borough (Band B2)

We consider people in Band B1 before Band B2. We’ll allocate properties in date order from when a person was given Band B priority.

Band C

People who are only in Band C do not have any priority. We’ll allocate properties in date order from when we decided to accept their application. Most people in Band C who are not also in a priority band will never be offered a social housing property.
