You could get help towards your heating or energy bills depending on your situation.

Winter Fuel Payments

You could get between £100 to £300 to help pay your heating bill in winter 2025 to 2026 if you were born on or before 22 September 1959.

Cold Weather Payments

The government makes Cold Weather Payments for each week of exceptionally cold weather to help towards extra heating costs.

You may get these if you receive certain benefits or Support for Mortgage Interest.

Warm Home Discount Scheme

You could get a £150 discount on your electricity bill in winter if you:

  • get the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit
  • are on a low income and have high energy costs

Energy costs

If you are struggling to pay your energy bills, you should speak to your energy provider as soon as possible. 

Under rules from regulator Ofgem, your supplier must help you – usually by negotiating a payment plan that you can afford.

Forced prepayment meters

Ofgem have adapted rules around the forced fitting of prepayment meters when households are in fuel debt. This means they cannot be fitted if:

  • households with a very elderly or young occupant (over 75 years or under 2)
  • household requires a continuous supply for health reasons, including dependency on any powered medical equipment
  • medical dependency on a warm home
  • households with chronic and severe or terminal health conditions

Energy company trust grants

Some utility providers have trust funds that can help by giving grants to some of their customers to help pay for gas and electricity arrears and other essential domestic bills.

Stay Warm Stay Safe

We provide extra services and support for residents who may be at risk during the cold weather.

This project is aimed at older people and vulnerable households such as families with young children or those with a physical, mental or learning disability.
