Appeal a Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support decision

If you disagree with our decision on your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claim, you can:

  • ask for an explanation of the decision
  • ask for a review of the decision
  • appeal to an independent tribunal

You must do it within one month of the date you received your decision letter.

Ask for an explanation of the decision

You can ask for an explanation if you:

  • do not understand how we worked out your Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claim
  • want to know more about any part of the calculation

We'll send you a written statement explaining how we made our decision.

If you still disagree with the decision, you can:

  • ask us to review the decision
  • appeal against the decision

Ask for a review of the decision

You can ask for a review if you think we've made a mistake and want us to look at your claim again.

We'll review our decision and then either change the decision or inform you that the original decision has not changed.

If you still disagree, you can appeal against the decision.

Appeal to an independent tribunal

There are different procedures for appeals relating to Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support claims.

Appealing a Housing Benefit claim

You can do this without first asking for an explanation or a review of the original decision.

We'll submit your appeal to HM Courts and Tribunal Service. You'll be sent notification of receipt of your appeal.

Appealing a Council Tax Support claim

We’ll consider your appeal and provide a written review decision within 2 months which will explain the reasons for the decision.

If we do not respond to your appeal within 2 months or if you are still unhappy with the revised decision, you can submit an appeal directly to the Valuation Tribunal Service.
