Set in Spain, the story follows Carmen as she resists convention and refuses to compromise her independence, leading to tragic consequences. The score includes some of opera's best-known music, including the Habanera, the Toreador Song and the Card Aria.
The Sunday 27 September performance features professional soloists alongside the Blackheath Halls Chorus, Blackheath Halls Orchestra and Blackheath Halls Opera Youth Company, with students from Charlton Park Academy also taking part.
The cast includes Katie Bray as Carmen, Oliver Johnston as Don José, Chuma Sijeqa as Escamillo, Meeta Raval as Micaëla, Grant Doyle as Zuniga, Tom Butler as Moralès, Clare Pooley as Frasquita, Ilona Nastase as Mércèdes, Jacq Herbots as Remendado and Zac Conibear as Dancaïre.
With music by Georges Bizet and a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy, performed in an English translation by Christopher Cowell, the production is directed by Harry Fehr with musical direction by Chris Stark. Set design is by Elliott Squire, costume design by Alice McNicholas and lighting design by Malcolm Richards.
