Playing pitch strategy

The Royal Greenwich Playing Pitch Strategy 2026 to 2036 provides an evidence-based framework for protecting, improving and planning playing pitch provision across the borough.

It assesses the current and future demand for playing pitches and associated facilities, helping us and our partners to make informed decisions about how we:

  • protect existing facilities
  • invest in improvements
  • provide new facilities where they’re needed

Overview

The strategy aims to ensure that Royal Greenwich has a network of high-quality, accessible and sustainable playing pitches that meet the needs of our growing and diverse communities, supporting participation in sport and physical activity for people of all ages and abilities.

It will help us to:

  • protect existing playing pitches and playing fields from inappropriate loss or development
  • identify current and future gaps in provision and where new facilities are needed
  • improve the quality, accessibility and sustainability of existing facilities
  • target investment towards areas and communities with the greatest need
  • support increased participation in sport and physical activity and reduce inequalities in access
  • provide an evidence base to inform planning, investment and funding decisions over the next 10 years

We’ll use the strategy alongside our Local Plan and other relevant strategies to guide future decisions and ensure playing pitch provision continues to meet the needs of residents, communities, schools, clubs and sports organisations.
