Operation Stop It

Operation Stop It brings the council, police and other enforcement agencies together to tackle environmental crime and offences that make streets and public spaces less safe, clean or accessible.

The operation is led by the Royal Borough of Greenwich in partnership with the Metropolitan Police, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) and other enforcement agencies.

What Operation Stop It targets

The operation focuses on offences including:

  • fly-tipping and illegal waste dumping
  • businesses not meeting their legal duty of care for commercial waste
  • abandoned and untaxed vehicles
  • other activities that negatively affect local streets and communities

How we check vehicles carrying waste

Council officers work with the police and other agencies to carry out roadside checks on vehicles carrying waste.

Officers may check:

  • where the waste has come from
  • where it is being taken
  • whether the person or business carrying it is registered to do so

These checks help us identify waste that may be transported or disposed of illegally.

Checks on businesses and construction sites

Officers may visit construction, renovation and refurbishment sites to check that contractors and businesses are disposing of waste legally.

This includes checking that they use licensed waste carriers and authorised waste facilities.

We also carry out joint visits to commercial premises to check that businesses are meeting their waste duty of care and disposing of business waste legally.

This joint approach helps us tackle environmental crime, protect the environment and keep streets and public spaces clean, safe and accessible.
