Help improve air quality and prevent pollution

About air quality and pollution

Air quality means how clean or polluted our air is. When air quality is poor, pollutants in the air may be harmful to people.

Air pollution can have short and long-term health effects. People with lung or heart conditions are most at risk.

Causes of air pollution

The main source of air pollution in London is road transport. Almost 40% of all nitrogen dioxide emissions within London come from diesel vehicles.

Other sources of air pollution that we can all work to address include emissions from:

  • gas boilers
  • burning wood and coal at home
  • construction sites
