How to report a hate crime or incident

A hate crime or incident happens when someone is targeted because of who they are, or who someone thinks they are. This could be based on:

  • disability
  • race
  • religion
  • transgender identity
  • sexual orientation

Any crime can be a hate crime if the person did it because they showed hatred based on those characteristics.

A hate incident can happen even if no crime is committed. For example, if a shopkeeper refuses to make their shop wheelchair accessible, it could be a hate incident.
