Apply for a dangerous wild animal licence

If you want to keep a dangerous wild animal, you must apply for a licence before buying it. This is a legal requirement under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act 1976 (GOV.UK)

This does not apply to circuses, zoos or pet shops.

Dangerous wild animals include: 

  • alligators and crocodiles
  • big cats
  • certain snakes
  • large birds
  • spiders, scorpions and other invertebrates
  • wild dogs and wolves

About the licence

Holding a licence means that: 

  • you're qualified to care for the animal
  • the animal is kept in safe and appropriate conditions 

A new licence expires after one year.  

Renewed licences last for up to 2 years. 

If you’re unsure whether your premises is suitable to house the animal, you can request an assessment or inspection before you apply for the licence.
