A* to B grades at A Level increased by two percentage points and A* to B grades increased by three percentage points. Overall the A Level pass rate was at 98 per cent, in line with the national figure.

Thirteen looked after young people are among the talented students who will take up places at universities such as Kings College, Southampton, Kent and Coventry in September.

Students also maintained last year's strong performance in vocational qualifications.

Leader of the Council Cllr Denise Hyland and several Cabinet Members visited several schools across the borough on results day to congratulate students on their success.

'Students worked incredibly hard'

Cllr Miranda Williams, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "Our students in the Royal Borough of Greenwich have worked incredibly hard to achieve such a fantastic set of results - congratulations to them all.

"I wish them every success with their next steps whether that's going on to a top university, starting an apprenticeship or going straight into the world of work. I would also like to thank parents, carers and all of our teaching staff for their tireless help and support which has enabled our young people to flourish."
