Give notice of your marriage or civil partnership

You need to give notice of your intention if you want to get married or form a civil partnership.

To do this, you need to attend a meeting with a registrar.

Make an appointment to give notice at your local registrar by calling 020 8921 5015 or by emailing registrar@royalgreenwich.gov.uk.

You must get married or form a civil partnership within one year of giving notice.

If you or your partner are subject to immigration control, you must give notice at a designated register office (Gov.UK). You're subject to immigration control if you need leave to enter or remain in the UK, for instance if you're a national of a non-European Economic Area country.

If your partner doesn't live in England or Wales, you can't give notice of marriage until the person living outside the country has arrived - you must then wait eight days. You can book your notice appointment in advance, however.

Documents you need to provide

To give notice of your intention to marry, you must provide proof of the following:

  • name
  • date of birth
  • place of residence 
  • nationality.

If either you or your partner has been previously married or in a previous civil partnership, you'll need your original final divorce or dissolution papers with the court's original stamp.

If any documents aren't in English, you must provide a complete translation including any court stamps as well as the original documents. The translation must be signed and dated by the person providing the translation and include their contact details. Any third party can provide the translation.

If you're giving notice and you've previously changed your name, you must provide proof of the change of name.

Costs for giving notice of marriage

You need to pay a fee to give notice of marriage. The amount you pay depends on if you're subject to immigration control or not.

What happens next

Once you've given notice and paid the fee, your notice will be displayed for 28 days.

If you're subject to immigration control, your notice will be displayed for either 28 days or 70 days depending on home office clearance unless you have the relevant marriage visa (Gov.UK) or civil partnership or fiancé/fiancée visa in which case it's displayed for 28 days.

You can apply to have the notice period reduced in exceptional circumstances. Contact the registrar for advice.

After the notice period has passed, you can collect your 'authorities for marriage'. If you're getting married in a church, the 'approved person' at the church will need to collect the 'authorities for marriage'.
