The Discretionary Council Tax Rebate offers support with rising energy costs to eligible homes in council bands E to H.

The Discretionary Council Tax Rebate is a one-off payment to help with rising energy costs. It’s part of the government’s Energy Bills Rebate scheme announced earlier this year.

There is a different rebate for people in council tax bands A to D.

This scheme is specifically tailored for eligible households in council tax bands E to H with eligible residents receiving either £150 or £65 from the council.

Those who pay their council tax by Direct Debit will automatically receive the payment, those not signed up to Direct Debit will receive a written letter outlining how to apply online.

Eligibility for the payment

If you live in a property in bands E to H and you get Council Tax Support as of 1 April 2022, you will receive £150.

You will be eligible for the payment, even if you:

  • received the Discretionary Council Tax Support payment

  • get the Single Person Discount

  • are behind with your council tax payments, known as being 'in arrears'

If you live in a band E property and you do not get Council Tax Support, you will receive £65.

You will be eligible for the payment, even if you:

  • pay a reduced amount of council tax because you get a discount

  • are behind with your council tax payments, known as being 'in arrears'

You will not get the payment if:

  • your property is a second home

  • your property is empty

  • you are registered for council tax as the landlord of a house in multiple occupation (HMO)

If you live in an HMO and you pay energy bills, you may be able to get help through the Emergency Support Scheme

We will write to eligible residents to tell you when and how you can apply online.
