Royal Greenwich councillors and local businesses recently met to see the progress made on a council-led regeneration scheme in Plumstead.

It marks the first phase of improvement works for some of the high street shops receiving 90 per cent of the total costs required to fund a new shopfront. Improvements for local businesses that successfully apply for funding can also include new lighting, canopy replacements, new fascia boards, exterior redesign, and the enhancement of brand identities. Along with shop front improvements, the scheme will also deliver upgrades to streets, roads and lighting, the creation of greener public spaces, and public artworks that will add character and celebrate Plumstead's rich history.

Plumstead is a priority regeneration area for the Royal Borough of Greenwich. Improvements to the High Street, Lakedale Road and White Hart Road are being funded by the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund and matched by the council, totaling £5.2 million of investment in the project.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We are delighted that the first phase of this regeneration scheme has commenced on site. A second and third phase are soon to follow, and we anticipate over thirty shops will be transformed by spring 2022.

“The Council are proud to play a major role in rejuvenating such an historic area of the borough. The improvements are designed to bring life and activity to Plumstead and reflect its diversity and vibrant community.”

Councillor Denise Scott-McDonald, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Good Growth of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said: “We are pleased and excited that this first phase of a much-needed upgrade for Plumstead High Street will be starting soon. Plumstead is a vibrant part of South East London and we hope these upgrades will shine a light on what the area has to offer.”

The regeneration scheme has a team of dedicated architects, builders, and designers on board to offer advice and support, ensuring the project is carried out to a high and consistent standard. Particular attention has also been paid to ensuring the preservation and enhancement of existing architectural features and details.
