This year's Stoptober celebrates its 10th anniversary and the estimated two million smokers who have so far used the campaign moment to make a quit attempt.
Cllr Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich said: “'I was a big smoker up until 2015, usually around 20 a day. I'd tried to quit many times – unsuccessfully – but then got into running. I couldn't run very far, nor very fast but was determined to push on and set myself a challenge to run a marathon a year later, which I did in 2016. Running has helped me to continue my no smoking journey and I'm now seven years in and about to complete my second World Series marathon in a week. It's also not just about my physical health – running is brilliant for mental health and has been a real lifeline through this pandemic.”
