We have joined the Centre for Homelessness Impact’s new collaborative network, What Works Community, to improve our long-term response to homelessness issues in the borough.

Over the next six months, using robust data and evidence, we will develop new ways of tackling homelessness through early intervention and targeted support. Temporary accommodation is only a short-term solution to homelessness and one which we know can impact people’s wellbeing.

Our aim is to reduce the need for temporary accommodation and find alternative, long-term and sustainable solutions to homelessness, including ending rough sleeping in our borough by 2024, to significantly improve the lives of people facing housing crisis. .

Member for Housing Cllr Anthony Okereke said, “Tackling the housing crisis is a top priority for the Council and as a London borough, demand for our services is high. The What Works Community is an opportunity for us to strengthen our use of evidence and data to reduce and prevent homelessness, including our use of temporary accommodation, and find more permanent solutions. We are looking forward to developing innovative and effective policies and practices that are based on tried and tested solutions.”

The What Works Community is the first of its kind in the UK and follows a successful pilot programme run by the Centre for Homelessness Impact and three founding local authorities in 2019/20. Through the 2021 programme, we will benefit from free expert guidance and training from thought-leaders around the world to help us shape solutions tailored to the needs of our community.

We remain firmly committed to doing all we can to prevent homelessness across the borough, and our collaboration with the Centre for Homeless Impact is a significant step towards achieving those goals.
