Our Greenwich Builds programme, which will provide 750 new council homes for social rent across the borough, has received another major with the approval of 80 sustainable new homes.

These homes, spread over three sites in Kidbrooke, join 207 currently under construction across the borough and a four home pilot scheme completed earlier this year in Woolwich.

The newly approved schemes, collectively referred to as The Brooks, are located along Rochester Way, and Royal Borough of Greenwich have made a commitment to spend £750,000 on improving recreational spaces in the local area. The developments also include a new retail unit and an extra road crossing on Rochester Way, both of which were added in response to resident feedback during an extensive consultation process.

All of the new homes are designed to meet zero-carbon standards through the use of sustainability technologies such as air source heat pumps and solar panels. A mix of one, two, three and four bedroom houses and apartments will be offered across all sites, with eight of the new homes being wheelchair accessible, responding to the needs of those currently on housing waiting lists.

Planning approval was granted for the schemes on 19 January 2021. Work is due to begin on all sites by spring 2021 with expected completion dates of between summer 2022 and spring 2023.

Councillor Danny Thorpe, Leader of the Royal Borough of Greenwich, said:

“I’m absolutely delighted we have secured planning permission for 80 sustainable council homes at these three sites, another big win for our Greenwich Builds programme and further evidence of our firm commitment to tackling the housing crisis. We know these new homes will transform the lives of people currently on our housing waiting lists and look forward to seeing tenants moving in.”

Royal Borough of Greenwich Cabinet Member for Housing, Anthony Okereke, said:

“The approval of 80 new council homes is a great start to the new year and a fantastic result for our Greenwich Builds programme, which has already enjoyed great success this year having obtained permission for over 200 new homes across the borough. We are particularly proud of our work on the three Brooks sites along Rochester Way, where extensive engagement with local residents has resulted in exemplary schemes incorporating a retail unit, new road crossing and £750,000 to improve the local area.”
