Be part of The Royal Greenwich Residents' Rainbow

Published: Tuesday, 18th August 2020

The Royal Greenwich Residents’ Rainbow is set to share residents’ thanks and wishes across the borough in a technicoloured burst of community spirit.

Immersing the whole borough in a mesmerising ribbon and light installation, everybody will have the chance to be a part of our gratitude and goodwill exchange that forms part of the Royal Greenwich – It’s Time festival.

Residents can share a wish for the future or thank those who have been vital in getting us through one of the most challenging times we’ve faced in generations.

Wishes and thank yous will be printed on to colourful ribbons and installed in a rainbow tree at one of eight locations across the borough.

Initially lit and decorated in one single colour of the rainbow, each area will feature wishes and thank yous from residents nearby. Throughout September, the colours and lights will be exchanged between areas, making each part of the borough a rainbow of colour with messages of gratitude from across communities.

Leader of the Council Councillor Danny Thorpe said: “The Royal Greenwich community spirit has been truly impressive over the last few months. We know that there is still work to be done to put an end to this terrible pandemic and that many people have suffered loss, but it’s also important for us to stay positive about the future and recognise the people who have kept us going through the worst times.

“Perhaps you’d like to thank the NHS or a neighbour who has been collecting your shopping during lockdown. Maybe you hope people keep up their new good habits like cycling or enjoying the outdoors in the future. This is your chance to share your thoughts and join our Residents’ Rainbow.”

The month-long celebrations will culminate in a spectacular laser light display that will be seen by residents far and wide on Saturday 26 September.

There are lots of opportunities for businesses and community groups to take part as well – perhaps by dressing their shop window in the colour of their area or recording a colourful dance routine. Business or groups interested in taking part can find out more by contacting our production company at rainbow@strongandco.net

Residents have until Wednesday 26 August to send in their wish or thank you by completing a short form online or available at one of the libraries across the borough.
