Families across Royal Greenwich have been benefitting from free sports packs to help get them active again after lockdown.

As part of a wider programme of activity from the Royal Borough of Greenwich and BETTER, the social enterprise which operates leisure facilities on behalf of the Council, free family sports packs have been made available to residents. Each pack consists of assorted sports equipment, such as racquets, bean bags and skipping ropes.

One resident who is delighted to have received a free sports pack is Angie Ngozi from Thamesmead. Like many residents, the mother-of-three has been inside for the most of lockdown and is looking forward to playing frisbee with her children Adanna Uzuchukwu, Chiamaka Uzuchukwu and Chinedu Uzuchukwu at Birchmere park. She said: “The sport packs will give my family some key equipment to play with at the park. It will help us spend time together being active as a family.”

Cllr Adel Khaireh, Cabinet Member for Culture, Communities and Equalities, said: “Sport and physical activity play a vital role in supporting people’s physical and mental health in all communities. This is a fantastic opportunity to get active with your family for free and I hope many residents will take advantage the free sport packs in our vast and beautiful parks, and open spaces.”

So far, 230 sports packs have been distributed for families to get active in their local parks. BETTER is hoping to make further sports packs available in the future.

Richard Gallagher, Partnership Manager at Better, said: “BETTER is proud to support families living in Royal Greenwich in partnership with the Council. The sport packs have been a great way to encourage families to keep active at home and when visiting the borough's many parks and open spaces. We also hope to see these families during the summer at our activity sessions which are taking place at various locations around the borough.”
