Royal Greenwich is taking steps to help address this during National Adoption Week (14-20 October), by supporting the national #YouCanAdopt myth busting campaign.

Cllr Jackie Smith, Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Community Safety, said: “There are always children waiting to be adopted in Royal Greenwich and it is our duty to ensure they are given the best opportunity to get ahead in life, but we are only able to do this when adopters come forward. There are far too many misconceptions surrounding who can adopt and I very much hope that this campaign will encourage more people to engage with us and offer a safe, permanent home to a young person who needs it.”

Children who are older, with siblings, have complex health needs, or a disability face a long wait, as do those from black, Asian, minority, and ethnic backgrounds, and faith groups. Royal Greenwich always tries to place children with people they can identify with and who will care for their needs, but this isn’t always easy.

Royal Greenwich hosts several information events throughout the year and our next adoption information session on is on Thursday 24 October, 6.30–9pm, in The Woolwich Centre. During the event, potential adopters will have the opportunity hear accounts from an array of Royal Greenwich adopters, ask our experienced adoption team any questions, and learn more about the comprehensive support we provide - right from the start of the adoption the process.
