This month Royal Greenwich is supporting Stoptober, the national campaign to encourage smokers across the country to quit the habit for 28 days and beyond.

To date, the annual campaign run by Public Health England has driven 1.7 million quit attempts and quitting success rates across the country are at an all-time high.

Thousands of local residents have given up with support and the Royal Borough of Greenwich, with outreach delivered by Charlton Athletic Community Trust, as well as NHS Greenwich Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), want to help more people do the same.

The Live Well Greenwich Stop Smoking service has helped thousands of residents to quit smoking over the years, and Royal Greenwich's dedicated team of friendly, trained advisors can help smokers find the right combination of support to improve their chances of quitting smoking for good.

Stoptober also offers a range of extra free quitting support including a Stoptober app, Facebook messenger bot, daily emails and Stoptober online communities.

Support available

Quitters in Greenwich can get support and information about local stop smoking drop-in centres, stop smoking medications and e-cigarettes from a range of sources:

  • visit the Live Well Greenwich website for support to quit your way today
  • call the Live Well Greenwich Stop Smoking Service free on 0800 470 4831 or texting 'QUIT' to 60060
  • look out for the 'Kick the Habit' smart car touring the borough this Stoptober to talk to friendly, trained advisors.

'Lots of ways to help you quit smoking'

Councillor Averil Lekau, Cabinet Member for Adult's Social Care, Health and Anti-Poverty, supports the campaign: "From one-to-one support and drop-in sessions, to nicotine replacement therapy and e-cigarettes, the Council's Live Well Greenwich Stop Smoking service has lots of ways to help you quit smoking.

"They will also be around the borough for Stoptober in the 'Kick the Habit' smart car, where residents can speak to a friendly advisor about stopping smoking."

'Quitting smoking is easier with the right support'

Greenwich GP and Clinical Chair of NHS Greenwich CCG Dr Krishna Subbarayan, said: "In England, 60 per cent of smokers are trying to quit by willpower alone, going 'cold turkey', but quitting smoking is easier with the right support and there are so many other resources that can make giving up easier.

"If you are a smoker, quitting is the best thing you can do for your health and the health of those around you. Become part of the movement and join thousands this Stoptober who are determined to become smoke free."
