Coronavirus COVID-19: Latest updates

Many council services are reduced or disrupted. Check our coronavirus page for the most up-to-date information. Read the latest and sign up for updates.

School closures

The government has announced the closure of schools and colleges , except for vulnerable children and those whose parents are considered key workers. The government has now produced a list detailing who falls into these categories.

Schools, colleges and childcare settings remain   safe places for children. The reduced number of children traveling to school, and the reduced numbers in educational settings, will help lower the risk of the virus spreading and infecting vulnerable individuals in wider society.

We’re continuing to work with schools and partners to ensure childcare is provided for the individuals the government has identified as key workers, such as doctors, nurses, some teachers and social workers and workers involved in food production.

Children who are entitled to free school meals, including those who are staying at home presently, will continue to have access to their meals. Individual schools are making contact with the parents of children who receive this provision. Please contact your child’s school for further information.
