Learn how to make cyanotypes, a Victorian photographic process which produces beautiful blue prints.

Come and learn how to make cyanotype prints in the beautiful surroundings of Shrewsbury House.

The cyanotype is a 19th century photographic process which uses chemicals that produce beautiful blue prints when exposed to sunlight. Cyanotype was originally championed by Victorian botanist Anna Atkins to document plant specimens. During this two hour workshop you will be introduced to this wonderful technique and learn how to make your own prints using leaves and flowers. After an introduction to the process and its history you will be shown how to coat your own paper with cyanotype chemicals. Whilst this is drying you will have an opportunity to make some test prints before using the paper which you have hand coated to create a range of images using sunlight to expose your images and then water to develop them. At the end of the two hour session you will leave with a range of prints. You’ll also receive a handout recapping the process and detailing a list of suppliers and online resources.

This workshop is only suitable for adults due to chemicals being used. This workshop will be led by Sally Gunnett, an artist and teacher who works with alternative photography and printmaking techniques and has over ten years of teaching experience. All materials and equipment including aprons and gloves will be provided. Leaves and flowers will also be provided but you are free to bring your own items to create your image with. £35 (+ booking fee)
