A plant discovery walk in a large area of varied grassland and hedges.

The common stretches for 37 ha and has a variety of habitats. The northern end is acid grassland although parts have imported soil dating from the Olympics in 2012. The southern section is mostly neutral grassland, with trees now colonising parts and in the south east corner are the remains of an old filter bed. There are hedges of hawthorn, cherry and blackthorn and it’s the only site in Royal Greenwich of the smooth tare. Terrain includes some hard paths, but we are likely to stray off these into uneven ground, possibly concealed in long grass.

Roy is a renowned botanist specialising in plant lore, as well as the author of Vickery’s Folk Flora. Roy will not be wearing a mask for audio reasons but will be happy to should any participant prefer him to.

The meeting point will be the car park in Stadium Road, Charlton SE18 4QH, opposite Queen Elizabeth Hospital.
