Sounds of the World brings critically acclaimed global musicians to Woolwich, creating a platform to share live music with local audiences. Join us on February 23rd for some beautiful Polish-Indonesian fusions, followed by some highlife West African grooves. We begin the night with Aga Ujma, a multi-instrumentalist mixing classical and folk influences from Poland with the musical arts of Indonesia, which she studied in Surakarta. Her intimate solo performances incorporate the bamboo zither from East Indonesia named ‘Sasando’, the ‘Siter’ from Central Java and the ‘Gendér metallophone. Aside from Poland, England & Indonesia, Aga has taken her beautiful blend of musics to Mexico, Borneo & the USA. Afrik Bawantu is an orchestra producing African rhythm-driven, dance inducing fusion with traditional roots, formed by Ghanaian vocalist and djembe drummer Afla Sackey. Afrik Bawantu’s original compositions blend highlife from West African percussion and more funk, rock genres, enhancing the cross-cultural collaboration. The uplifting rhythm section in harmony with roaring brass accompanied by high-powered bass lines creates a powerful Afro-Funk sound with an energy that drives audiences to the dance floors. Audiences are invited to interact with the artists after the performances through a live Q&A session, providing an opportunity to learn about the performers artistic journeys and musical styles. Sounds of the World is a partnership between South East musician and promoter Ganga Thapa and Greenwich & Lewisham Young People’s Theatre. ‘We live in a remarkably diverse society, but sometimes we forget our communities because of lack of time’ (Ganga Thapa).
