Mayor Mick Hayes Blog - February 2020

A sad duty.

As Mayor, I attended the celebration of life of Pastor Gabriel Diya, Comfort Diya and Emmanuel Diya on 4 February, who lost their lives in Spain.

The Chair of the Ecumenical Borough Dean, Reverend Mike Leader, accompanied me to the funeral.

Metropolitan Police

On 5 February, the Mayoress and I attended the Metropolitan Police South East Borough Command Unit Achievement Event.

Once again, it was a pleasure to witness the work undertaken by the police.

Birthday celebrations

I had the pleasure of attending two special birthday celebrations. Beryl celebrated her 106th Birthday on 9 February at Meadows House and Elizabeth celebrated turning 100 on 1 March at Time Court Residential Home.

I hope to revist them soon.

Opening of shop

I was up early on 13 February to open Lidl at Greenwich Shopping Park.

In the evening, I was pleased to welcome the newly elected Members of the Greenwich Young Peoples Council. It was great to chat to the group and hear about their aspirations and what they want to achieve.

Greenwich Tibetan Association

It was a pleasure to attend the Greenwich Tibetan Association New Year Celebrations on 15 February. On 10 March it was great to receive a small delegation to the Town Hall. We raised the Tibetan flag for the day to celebrate the New Year.

Visits to the Mayors Parlour

I invited the following groups to come to the Mayors Parlour, so that I could thank them for all that they do in Greenwich.

Crossroads Care volunteers and clients on 20 February; Greenwich Irish Pensioners on 27 February and Greenwich Pensioners Forum on 28 February.

Plumstead Centre Grand Opening

The Mayoress and I attended the grand opening of the Plumstead Centre on 29 February.

Scouts

I enjoyed meeting the scouts during February.

On 24 February, we received a visit to the Mayors Parlour from the 1st Royal Greenwich Scouts and at the end of the evening, they presented me with my very own scarf representing their group. On 29 February, the Mayoress and I attended the 8th Royal Eltham Scout Group 100th year celebration at the United Reform Church Eltham.

They had really worked hard to show how much had been achieved in 100 years of scouting. I was shown around displays and photographs and we also joined in with the singing.
